What You Can Do

Even under neutrality, you as an individual have the right to REFUSE to support or vote for a union. You can actively work AGAINST unionization of JCI. Your right to do so is a "protected activity" under the National labor Relations Act. It is illegal for either a union or an employer to prevent you from speaking up, talking to your fellow employees, or following your own conscience on the subject of union representation. (See "The NLRB and You")

If you agree that unionization of JCI Holland would be bad for you, your co-workers, the company, and the community, we recommend these steps:

  1. Do not sign anything given to you by a UAW organizer or coworker who is supporting the UAW. These "meeting attendance" cards, or "interest" cards are official documents. Getting yours back can be done, but it's not easy, and may take a lot of time.
  2. Do not allow a UAW organizer to visit you at home. Your home is your property. You have the right to decide who is your guest. Don't be surprised if the UAW shows up with fellow JCI workers who are pushing the union.
  3. Don't accept any phone calls from a UAW organizer or anyone helping them.
  4. Ask hard questions of your team leaders, supervisors, and plant leadership during You-Talks and other plant meetings.
  5. Share your feelings — and the information and facts you find — with your co-workers. Again, your right to do so is protected under federal law.
  6. Speak up in company meetings. Many other JCI employees feel the same way you do. Your public statements will give them courage.
  7. Help distribute our materials. Check out our Downloads page for materials you can print and give out to other employees.
  8. Demand your privacy. Request at every opportunity that your name and address not be given to the UAW by Johnson Controls. Check Downloads for sample letters.
  9. Keep the faith. There is no time limit for the UAW's attempts to organize JCI Holland. Only sustained, organized, public opposition will convince the UAW that they will not succeed here.
  10. Check this website frequently. We will do our best to bring you frequent updates of news, opinion, and information about the UAW and its plans here.
