Why is There Joy In Maryville?

During the UAW's organizing campaign at Schefenacker Vision Systems USA near Port Huron, workers picketed the plant almost every day.

But the Schefenacker picketers were not on the usual side.  "UAW Kills Jobs," said their signs, and "Proud to be union free."

Many of the Schefenacker workers had been UAW in earlier jobs, or had parents or relatives who were lifelong union members.  They had no interest in seeing the UAW in Marysville, though.  In the Detroit News article Schefenacker assembler Laura Dickinson said "The UAW will sell you out if it suits their needs."

After more than a month of aggressive organizing last December, the UAW gave up.  It canceled the vote rather than suffer an embarrassing loss.
