Why Do We Say, "Keep Control"?

No one has ever shown the Neutrality Agreement to JCI employees. But — based on the best information that is available — here are just some of the ways JCI employees might lose control under the UAW's Neutrality Agreement:

  1. We can't keep our names & addresses from being sent to the UAW. JCI is required to send this information to the Union.
  2. We no longer have a choice about when we might want to vote on a union. The UAW decides when it wants an election — and then there are only a few days before the election takes place.
  3. We can't decide how an election would be held. The UAW — not JCI or employees — decides whether an election will be by card check, private election, or NLRB-sponsored election.
  4. We can no longer talk to our managers or supervisors about the union — they can be fired if they say anything negative.
  5. If the UAW gets in, we become subject to collective bargaining — we're bound by the terms of whatever contract the Union negotiates, whether we like it or not. See The Risks of Union Membership
  6. If the UAW gets in, we would be controlled by a Detroit-based union — not one with any experience or regard for West Michigan and the Holland area.
  7. If the UAW gets in, we have to pay dues and fees, with possible fines and assessments. The dues will probably be taken right out of our paychecks, like taxes. We lose control of our money. See The Costs of Union Membership
  8. If the UAW gets in, we're subject to union discipline. We can be put on "trial" and expelled for things as vague as "engaging in conduct unbecoming a member of the Union." See The Obligations of Union Membership
  9. If the UAW gets in, we could no longer talk about work issues directly with our managers and supervisors without a union rep or shop steward present.
  10. Even if we decided for some reason that we did want a union, we would have no choice — it would be the UAW or nothing.
  11. If the UAW calls a strike, we lose control of our ability to make a living and could be permanently replaced. See Strikes
  12. Our employment is now subject to an agreement that none of us has ever seen.

That's why we say "Keep Control at Johnson Controls in Holland."
